In a nation known for the girths of its citizenry, American Pie is a teen comedy that interplays the sexual appetites of its virginal protagonists with subdued commentary on the self-defeating nature of American views on sexuality. Four teenagers make a not-terribly-solemn vow together to overcome their virginity by the prom, each taking different paths - some of which are entirely accidental - to achieve this seemingly simple goal. The film follows each of the four young men as they have separate misadventures in the realm of sexual conquest, punctuated by quirky and often bluntly vulgar humor (as in a specific pastry-abusing scene that lends the movie its title). The ultimate fulfillment of their goals only reaches an appropriate climax - in all possible ways - during the prom's after-party, during which they also learn the value of long term relationships between trysts.
