Bill Rago is a man out of work from his regular job in advertising. He takes temporary employment as a teacher at a military base. The Master's degree he earned when he was a younger man permits him to serve as an English teacher. The assignment is to keep recruits with poor skills in the subject from failing basic training. Unless the class improves in the subject, they will all be drummed out of the Army. Rago starts out not taking the job very seriously, but then he begins to develop a passion for the assignment. This is especially true when he finds out that the Drill Instructor expects and desires for the recruits with poor literacy skills to fail.
