Marcellus Gallio is a tribute in ancient Rome who is one of the men tasked with crucifying Jesus Christ. As the crucifixion is unfolding, a drunken Marcellus wins Christ's robe, and he begins to suffer from intense regrets and torments as a result. He is set to marry his true love, but the robe has him obsessed, and he returns to Jerusalem in an effort to learn as much as he can about the man who wore it. In the process, he meets up with a group of Christ's followers and is mesmerized by their joyful approach to life, especially considering the fact that many of them are very badly off. He decides that he needs Christ's joy in his life, no matter the cost.
