Rodrigo Borgia's meteoric rise to ultimate power as Pope Alexander VI established an infamously corrupt papal regime. With the aid of his violent son, Cesare, he made use of bribes and simony to work his way upward from a regular position in the clergy to the highest seat in the Vatican. Naturally, the use of such cunning to establish himself and his family led to animosity from other families inside and outside of the Church. The Borgias thus found themselves in a position where they had to continue the pattern of illicit dealings and violent acts in order to keep the prestige and the power that they had taken for their own.
