Based on a true story, hockey player Herb Brooks becomes the coach for the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. He was cut from the 1960 team, so his goal was to become an Olympic coach. He recruits college kids and starts to train them for competition. He teaches his players the European style of hockey, so they can better compete with a dominate Soviet Union team. He shows them the importance of playing as a team, and in the process, they become like a family. The U.S. team beats the Soviet Union in the semifinal game in Lake Placid. They then go on to beat Finland and win the gold medal.
