Edna Spalding lives on a small farm with her husband, who is a sheriff. Although it is the Great Depression, they enjoy a fairly comfortable existence until he is killed and Edna must run the farm on her own while caring for her children. As she struggles to keep up with the many duties of running a functional cotton farm. Edna finds help in unexpected places as time goes on. A traveling man named Moses offers his help in planting the cotton and taking care of the kids, while a blind man named Mr. Will rents a room from Edna, thus contributing to the family finances. However, it isn't enough to cover the mortgage payment, and if she can't pay that soon, they'll be evicted.
