The 1930s was a time of racism and Jim Crow for Texas. Despite that, Professor Melvin Tolson took it upon himself to form and coach a debate team of young African American students. While the team develops skill and becomes well known champions, they are forced to do this while ignoring the threats and intimidation around them. Eventually, the debate team takes on a team of white students, and they become part of an important historical moment in race relations.
