Hugo Cabret is a twelve year old boy who lives alone in the walls of the Gare Montparnasse railway station in Paris, following the death of his father in a museum fire and the disappearance of his alcoholic uncle Claude. He learned about repairing mechanical devices from both, but most important to Hugo was the automaton his father was repairing, which could supposedly write a message. Using his mechanical skills, Hugo mends the station's clocks while eking out a living by stealing food and supplies. Meanwhile, he also reviews his father's notes on the automaton, stealing parts with which to fix it while avoiding the station inspector, who would hand him over to the local orphanage should he be caught.
