Sister Helen Prejean is a nun with a deep devotion to her calling. She finds herself spending much of her time on death row serving as a confidant for Matthew Poncelet, who is responsible for a brutal killing. Though she despises what he did and empathizes deeply with the victim's friends and family who want to see justice served, she does not believe an execution will truly provide any justice. The intrepid nun becomes deeply concerned for Matthew over the course of her visits and devotes herself to comforting him and trying to find a way to stop his execution. At the same time, she serves as his spiritual counselor and tries to convince him of the peace that will come with accepting Jesus Christ.
